Cardenal. Prefecto emérito de la Congregación para el Clero y Arzobispo emérito de Sao Paulo. Franciscano y Presidente de la Red Eclesial Panamazónica. Doctor en filosofía por el Antonianum, Roma, y especialista en ecumenismo por el Instituto Ecuménico de Bossey.

Nombrado Obispo de Santo André, Hummes ganó amplia experiencia pastoral en el mundo trabajador y en múltiples ocasiones jugó el rol de mediador entre las compañías y sus gremios. En 1996, fue nombrado Arzobispo de Fortaleza. Dos años después, fue nombrado como el nuevo Arzobispo de Sao Paulo. Creado Cardenal junto con el Papa Francisco, es miembro de los siguientes organismos de la Curia Romana: Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe; Congregación para el Culto Divino y la Disciplina de los Sacramentos; Congregación para los Obispos; Congregación para Educación Católica; Pontificio Consejo para la Familia; Pontificio Consejo para la Cultura; Pontificio Consejo para los Laicos; Pontificio Consejo para el Diálogo Interreligioso; Pontificio Consejo “Cor Unum”; Pontificia Comisión para América Latina (CAL); y el Consejo Ordinario de la Secretaría General del Sínodo de los Obispos.

Cardinal. Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for the Clery and Archbishop Emeritus of Sao Paulo. Franciscan and President of the Red Eclesial Panamazónica (REPAM). He graduated as Doctor of Philosophy from the Antinianum Rome and he also holds a specialization in ecumenism from the Ecumenical Institute at Bossey.

Appointed Bishop of Santo André, he gained a wide pastoral experience in the world of workers and in mediating between companies and their trade unions. In 1996, he was appointed Archbishop of Fortaleza. Two years later, he was appointed Archbishop of Sao Paulo and afterwards he was made a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II together with Pope Francis. He is member of the following agencies of the Roman Curia: Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith; Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments; Congregation for Bishops; Congregation for Catholic Education; Pontifical Council for the Family; Pontifical Council for Culture; Pontifical Council for the Laity; Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue; Pontifical Council «Cor Unum»; Pontifical Commission for Latin America (CAL); and the Ordinary Council of the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops.
